London to Kenya

Recommended route:

Unless flight times change in the next 12 months, we recommend this route:

  • London Heathrow to Nairobi (Jomo Kenyatta International):

    • British Airways: 10:10 London Heathrow - 20:50 Nairobi (8 hours 40 mins)

      OR

    • Kenya Airways: 17:25 London Heathrow - 05:00 Nairobi (9 hours 35 mins)

  • Nairobi (Wilson airport) to Diani (Ukunda airport): the latest flight to Ukunda is 4pm and the earliest is 9.45am so unless you come via Mombasa or another airport, your best option is to stay the night in Nairobi

  • Wilson Airport is where you’ll take all domestic flights. It’s a tiny airport, probably the size of a restaurant, you can usually turn up 45 minutes before your flight, just beware of traffic in Nairobi which is notoriously bad

    • Flight time: 1 hour 10 mins

    • Airlines: Any of the providers you find on Skyscanner such as Safari Link (the only one we’ve

      used) or JamboJet Diani

  • Diani to Nairobi (same as above)

  • Nairobi (Jomo Kenyatta) to London Heathrow :

    • British Airways: 20:45 Nairobi - 22:45 London (8 hours 55 mins)

      OR

    • Kenya Airways: 9:20 Nairobi - 15:15 London Heathrow (7 hours 55 min

Getting around Kenya

During the wedding:

We’ll arrange transport for guests during the wedding - more details to follow. For travel in Diani on other days, we recommend taxis, tuk tuks or picky pickys.

Local Taxis in Diani:

William: +254715825720

Anita: +254 717 532 150

Ignatius: +254 711 423 717

Laurence: +254 727 801 872

Tuk Tuk, Picky Picky, Boda Boda:

All available roadside:

  • Tuk tuks: like in Thailand. A great way to travel - breezy and cheap

  • Picky Picky: motorbike, most common mode of travel for locals, cheap

  • Boda Boda: bicycle, cheap but not comfortable

Uber:

Works in Nairobi, Mombasa and other tourist places. Availability is limited, so have a plan B.

Donkey:

If you visit Lamu, donkeys and cycling are the only way to get around the island

Matatu:

The local bus service that you can flag down from the side of the road. Noticeable from the blaring music and colourful designs

Hire Car:

Similar price to what you pay in the UK. Probably easier and cheaper to hire a taxi for the day

Train:

We’ve never done it but you can take the Madaraka Express which takes 4.5 hours from Nairobi to Mombasa and then drive. Recommend going First Class. You can take in the wildlife from your seat.
